Paper Folding Flowers

 Paper Folding Flowers

Grade Level: 2nd Grade

Paper Crafts

Summary of Lesson:

This lesson revolved around origami and how to make a paper tulip. To start off the lesson, the teacher presented on the screen different types/levels of origami,  examples, the origin of origami, and two artists who practice origami. After the presentation of the lesson, the teacher set up the dot cam and then started by going step-by-step on how to make a tulip. A tool that was very useful and brought up in the lesson, was a wooden dowel to fold down the edges and creases. The teacher started with the flower petals and the creation of those, then they moved to how to make the leaves as well as how to attach it all together with tape. This was very independent work time. There needed to be at least 3 flowers made with the petals going opposite ways of each other. During the end of the lesson, students were asked to recall information from the slideshow to reiterate what they learned.

Extension Activity:

An extension activity for this project could include science. In this lesson originally, a few parts of the flower are discussed simply such as the stem, petals, and leaves. But, the growth cycle of a flower could go more in depth with photosynthesis and the process of a growing plant/flower. This could lead to the students creating a presentation over different plants and flowers and how they turn out. Students will work in groups and learn cooperation skills as well as presentation skills as they will go in front of the class presenting in either a poster, online presentation, or diorama.
