Underwater Sea Creatures

Underwater Sea Creatures

Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Media: Painting

 Summary of Lesson:

This lesson focuses on the exploration of underwater sea creatures through different mediums such as watercolor and crayon. This lesson started off with a visual presentation over different ways of using watercolor and the techniques that work with it. Students worked step-by-step with the teacher on a scratch piece of paper over the different uses; there were six in total. After the completion of this step, students were able to start on their actual project. On the projector screen there were various examples of sea creatures that students could create on their work, as well as freedom to look up images on a device of their own. This was very independent work as students had freedom to which animals and underwater landscape they could create, the only requirement was at least 3 sea like elements. Everything was drawn out in pencil and then erased as crayons were drawn overtop of the previous lines. Everything was colored in crayon besides the water background. There needed to be 3 different techniques of watercolor in the painting. Finally, when students finished their work was put on the drying rack and soon hung up.

Extension Activity:

An extension for this activity could include science and biology. Students could be introduced to a science lesson through a presentation or video, over the sea habitat and its inhabitants. The lesson could be over the difference in oceans, where they are located, and a couple examples of the difference of climate and animals. Students will be able to learn more about animals, which they typically love, while also creating something unique in their interests, which they also love.
