Animal Plate Printmaking
Animal Plate Printmaking
Grade: 4th Graders
This lesson focused on the medium of printmaking specifically with plates. The teacher introduced herself to the class and asked if the students knew what pop art was. Then a quick, 5 minute video was put on for the students to watch which explained pop art, what it was, different artists and different works that represent said movement. Now that the students knew what was expected, the project began. First, students practiced on a piece of white paper an animal of their choosing while the teacher modeled how to draw a cat. From there, the student would outline and trace their animal with a sharpie, on a styrofoam plate. The painting then began. Students went over to a table that was covered in paper, that had was paper sheets taped on. On each sheet of wax paper, there are four different colors: red, black, blue, and yellow. Students then are demonstrated how to use said printmaking paint and create their masterpiece. They made sure to make four even squares for the students to put one image on each square. When all done, students sat back down and colored in the different squares with the colors: yellow, purple, red, and blue. The only rule was to not color on top of the same color example yellow cat and yellow color. When coloring, students were asked what they remembered and then the lesson was complete!
Extension Activity:
An extension activity for this lesson could involve writing. Students will complete the lesson as normal, but when they finish, they will need to write a paragraph over why they chose the animal they did, what they learnt about pop art, and why it is important to learn about art movements. Fourth grade is a great age to implement writing before intermediate and elementary school. With this activity, they will grow in their writing skills which will be very beneficial come the rest of their academic and professional career.
