Hidden Safari Project
Hidden Safari Project
Summary of Project:
This project is designed to trick the eye and get students thinking about color. To start off the lesson, the teacher talked about color and color theory. Students were then able to see slides and talk about the animals that they saw, which helps them observe. After the presentation over color, students then came up to the table and would pick out a drawing of a safari animal like a giraffe, elephant, gorilla, and more. They would then get a blank sheet of paper and a blue colored pencil. Students will then softly draw an outline of their animal in blue. After this, they will then color over their animal with warm colors such as red, orange, and yellow. They will not fully color as that ruins the effect, but they will draw different patterns such as swirl, squiggles, and dots. Now that their hidden safari is hidden, they will want to see it! So, red glasses will need to be created. Students will cut out a template given to them, on a red piece of paper, that asks like sunglasses. They will then glue precut thin, red plastic to the glasses template. Students will need to be patient and let their glasses dry but once they are, they can use them to see their now available safari! Students love this project and love the "magic" behind the colors.
Elephant
1) I live in the jungle.
2) I have a long nose.
3) I have big, floppy ears.
Extension Activity:
An extension activity for this project could incorporate science. Student will create biome for their hidden animal that represents where they live with different flora and fauna. They can use a shoe box and fill it with their own drawings that represent what their safari animal lives around. For example, I chose an elephant to put under my swirls. An elephant typically lives in the continent of Africa across a grassland type of landscape. I would include in my shoebox a figurine or drawing of an elephant would be the center focus, then around it, I could create pipe cleaner grass, clay trees, and drawings of different animals among elephants. This would help students understand where animals that they adore, come from. Students could also present their biomes to the class which would help their presentation and social skills.
